The Room Where It Happens: A Brotherhood Spotlight with Bro. William Rogers

The Room Where It Happens: A Brotherhood Spotlight with Bro. William Rogers

Some brothers carry their service quietly. You see them at chapter meetings, doing the work, holding the line, and never asking for the spotlight. Bro. William Rogers, 18K Gold, fall 2014, is exactly that kind of brother. This is a Brother whose life has been defined by one consistent thread: showing up.

From the Yard to the State

Before Alpha, before Gamma Lambda, Bro. Rogers was already building a resume of service that most would find hard to match. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University, he entered the Army Reserve in the fall of 1989, serving for six years as a unit armorer responsible for the weapons of his unit. He reached the rank of Specialist E4 and, by a narrow margin of timing, missed deployment to the Gulf War. He reflects on that with characteristic humility, crediting those who served in far greater capacities while acknowledging that the willingness to serve was always there.

From there, Bro. Rogers built a career with the Michigan Department of Corrections that now spans over three decades. He started as a corrections officer at a maximum-security facility that also housed mentally ill individuals, an experience he describes as formative and sobering. He later became a parole agent in Oakland County, serving that role for a decade before rising to his current position as Region Manager, overseeing two field offices in Wayne County.

He did not plan a career in corrections. He planned to go into law enforcement. But a door closed, another opened, and Bro. Rogers walked through it with purpose.

Building the Brotherhood

Bro. Rogers was drawn to Alpha the way many brothers are by watching Alpha men carry themselves differently. A conversation with Bro. Adrian Green, in March 2014, brought him to an informational, and the rest, as he puts it, is history.

Inside Gamma Lambda, he did not rush to the front. He observed. He learned. He served under Bro. Kyles Hamilton and Bro. Al Elvin before eventually running for Chapter Dean, a position he held for three years. His motivation mirrored his career instinct: a love for guiding and developing people. He has served nearly three years as Recording Secretary, a role he describes as the ideal position for anyone serious about understanding how a chapter truly operates.

Words for the Brothers Coming Up

When asked what he would say to newer members or brothers transitioning into GL’s culture, Bro. Rogers did not hesitate. His advice was direct and earned.

Do not take the culture personally. Stay your course. Learn how things work before you push to change them. Speak up, but do it respectfully, because a disrespectful message is a lost message. Give proper deference; it is not weakness, it is wisdom. And above all else, be present.

He borrowed a line from the musical Hamilton to land the point: if you want to be in the room when change or decisions happen, you must be in the room.

Bro. William Rogers has watched some of life’s hardest realities up close without losing his sense of quiet purpose. Gamma Lambda is better for having him in the room.

    Congratulations, Bro. Rogers,
You are truly a man of action and few words. Your characteristics are similar to those of my late father. I loved him, admired him, and have tried to continue his legacy. With that said, I hold you in the same high esteem, my Brother. You are a GOOD BROTHER. You came into the fraternity and moved like I did when I first joined Gamma Lambda Chapter (GL)โ€”not seeking titles or recognition, but learning the history and culture of GL and doing the work of Alpha. You are an inspiration and asset to GL, to many people, and to our community. Continue to Uphold the Light! Alpha is what you make it, and whatever your heart desires, it will come true. There goes an Alpha Man!
