Blood Drive for Sickle Cell at MWRC
Sickle cell disease affects about 100,000 people – largely African Americans. Sickle cell patients require frequent transfusions of specific blood types. One individual may require up to 100 pints of blood each year. One in three African Americans could be a match for a Sickle Cell Warrior.
One such Warrior is Camille Lonzer, daughter of General President Willis Lonzer, III. At the 97th General Convention in Dallas, the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the American Red Cross held a blood drive to honor Camille and her childhood friend Jaden Blake, who passed away in a fatal car crash. He was a true hero, advocating, and frequently donating blood, as well as his organs, ultimately saving lives.
On Friday March 21, 2025, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Detroit Marriott Hotel Renaissance Center (Ontario East Room โ Level 3), the Midwest Region of Alpha Phi Alpha will hold a blood drive in support of Sickle Cell Warriors. Brothers and community members are asked to roll up their sleeves and donate. We need 70 eligible donors to sign up. Make a commitment today and and sign up. You can sign up through the Red Cross Website (use sponsor code: APAMWRCDET25), or reach out to Brother Anthony Will and he will register you.
Each donor will receive a free health screening (including A1C, temperature hemoglobin, and blood pressure checks), $30 in Amazon Gift Cards, and a Red Cross T-Shirt. Each donor will be entered into a raffle for some Alpha Phi Alpha swag.
