Gamma Lambda Community Development Corporation

Background: Gamma Lambda Community Development Corporation is a private, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in May 2007 to create programs that educate and enhance the lives of urban, at-risk males. Corporation programs assist urban males in their educational and social endeavors. It is through these programs that Gamma Lambda Community Development Corporation aims to strengthen at-risk families and prevent the generational cycle of poverty, teen pregnancy and educational stagnation.  

Our Vision: The vision of Gamma Lambda Community Development Corporation is to develop and sustain efforts and services that encourage strong, healthy and self-sustaining families and supportive communities.

Our Mission: The mission of Gamma Lambda Community Development Corporation is to develop young leaders, promote academic excellence and eradicate the negative cycle of at-risk males in Detroit and southeast Michigan’s tri-county area through the promotion of comprehensive, innovative programs focused on:

• Mentorship – Studies show that sustained relationships between a youth and an adult — where the adult provides continuous help, support and guidance — improves the youth’s overall academic achievement.  
• Prevention – Urban teen pregnancy, at an all-time high, is preventable through mentorship and the strengthening of at-risk, urban males.
• Educational Assistance – Recognizing the importance of academic fulfillment, academic support is necessary to help youngsters — particularly urban males who often fall through the proverbial educational cracks — matriculate through secondary and post-secondary educational institutions.
• Emancipation – Touting independence, economic empowerment and entrepreneurship, GLCDC is committed to assist urban adolescents with the critical teenage-to-adulthood transformation
• Public Awareness – Recent studies indicate that members of Generation Y have become increasingly aware of social and societal ills. GLCDC takes this phenomenon one step further by inspiring urban adolescents to become involved in their respective communities through myriad volunteer and community service opportunities.

Community: In Continuation of our legacy of effective collaboration, GLCDC is proud to partner with public and private organizations in an effort to better serve Detroit Michigan and Wayne County African American at risk males in need.

Purpose:  The purpose of the Gamma Lambda Community Development corporation is to is to 1) promote and encourage economic development in minority and disadvantaged communities by expanding the opportunities for the residents of those communities to enter into, own, manage, operate and/or be employed in business enterprises which are based upon the substantial participation of the low income community.” Additionally, the CDC’s aim is help at risk males concentrate on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement.  School completion heavily impacts the success of young at risks African-American men and is the single best predictor of future economic success. Finally to promote and provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young at risk males ages 12-15 years.
